I’d be covering the interest on the $4b debt with loving re-releases of the back catalogue and I’d hire David Puttnam to advise on production models which would serve to slash the up-front salaries of the stars and their rapacious agents in the creation of the kinds of movies he was pushing to get made at Columbia in the mid-eighties with directors like Bill Forsyth. I’d be looking to Rupert and James Murdoch to underwrite the enterprise. If that means merging with Fox – that’s fine. If the greedy stars don’t like it they can take a hike.
Plenty more where they came from.

‘Live Event Cinema’ – or ‘Theatre to Film’ would be one of the branches of story-telling innovation – this will be of interest to the world’s great singer-songwriters, stars of sport, and theatre practitioners like Peter Brook, Robert Lepage and Circe de Solei -
magicians of the moment.
The infastructure is in place, Mr Shepard.

We’ll also be making great movies in the tried and trusted way with huge stars who see the back-end sense in what I’m proposing.

They’ll be getting the best scripts for one thing.

…and massively talented co-stars for another.

Let’s talk, James. But before we do you should read up about the formation of United Artists. Fairbanks, Pickford, Chaplin and Griffith knew what they were doing. Bigger than the Beatles.

Read about David Puttnam’s seminars at the University of Bristol Drama Department in 1985:

I was lucky to be there.
